Canada Day tomorrow

So I spent last Canada Day in Seoul. How stoked am I for this one back on Canadian soil, and in Ottawa?

And again... Member Relations Officer

Polarized

So, Paul Martin won't form a coalition, but will rather partner with parties on individual issues. So, he can do all the crazy left-wing stuff he wants with the NDP (and the Bloc) and all the crazy right-wing stuff he wants with the Conservatives. No moderation though!

And the winner is...

OK, Here are the results from the Toby-score-o-matic for election predictions:

Brett Bergie: 302 points
Duncan: 297
Toby: 285
Barb: 284
Greg: 283
Robbie: 280
Ollie: 272
Kim: 272
James: 250

Yay Brett!

Ha ha! (in Nelson voice)

My favourite part about the election results? United right + strong performance by conservatives = more left wing government! huzzah!

Guess who's back?

Last election I went to Joe Clark's victory party. Sadly, there won't be one of those this time. Maybe I'll go visit Ed...

Vote!

Go Vote! I did!

Ugh, Last night was ROUGH. I mean really, really ROUGH. Robbie's Back Alley night couldn't compete, trust me. More details to come. It hurts to think.

Election Predictions

OK, with no further ado, here are Toby's predictions for the federal election. I am notoriously BAD at predicting these sorts of things, so it will be interesting to see how it pans out. I've got to admit, Quebec was pretty much a guess. Comments? Flames?

Free Svend!

Yikes! Longtime NDP MP Svend Robinson charged with theft for taking ring.
Need I remind you to free Svend?

Harry Potter

So, I saw Harry Potter 3 while I was in Calgary. I've read the first three books in the series and without a doubt the third one was my favourite. It was much more mature, and didn't have a cop-out ending. The vast majority of reviews for the third film are very positive, calling it the best of the three. The first two were directed by Columbus, with this one being done by Alfonso Cuarón.

Both Barb and I, and I believe my brother too, were not huge fans of this movie, however. I felt like I was watching an action movie, when it really should have been a more suspensefull thriller. I mean it's about a freakin' murderer who has broke out of jail and is loose near the school. Despite what most reviewers say, I didn't really feel this was a "dark" movie. It seemed more like an action / adventure.

The story is very complex, and I'm quite glad I read the book, because otherwise I don't think I would have known what the hell was going on. The movie seems very rushed. I don't know how they'll manage to fit the fourth story into a movie, as it's a much larger book. But it felt like Cuarón glossed over a lot of important things in trying to cover the entire story.

I did like the movie, don't get me wrong. It just didn't live up to the expectations I had from the book and critics' reviews. You should still go see the movie. The actors have really matured. There are great visuals, and Cuarón did a fantastic job with the ending. And if you're like most people, you'll like it more than I did.

Report Card

And the results are in: Greens earn top marks for education platform

Friday, June 18, 2004

It's not easy being lefty...

Hmm, seems intersting that the CFS did not grade the Green Party or the Bloc in their report card. Perhaps they were worried another party might do better than their buddies in the NDP?

Election

I guess I can't really chide the populous for being all over the election map when I myself have yet to decide who to vote for. I thought I had ruled out at least one of the parties, but I got a mail-out from my Conservative candidate, Kevin Friday, yesterday. His number two priority is student debt. Can I complain that candidates don't address youth issues, and then rule out one that does? Still, a vote for a Conservative is a vote for the Conservatives. *shudder*

I had been leaning towards the Greens. My candidate seems interesting and is a U of C grad! The field is still open for the Toby vote. Potential candidates may contact me. Although, I'm in one of the safest Liberal ridings in the country, so I don't think Mauril is too worried. My vote doesn't really count, almost like I still live in Alberta.

Off to Edmonton

I leave Ottawa at 6am this morning to Toronto, and then from Toronto to Edmonton. Yes, James Kusie is the worst flight-booker in history. Yikes, Edmonton here I come...

Students: Hungry for Change

Sigh, another day of being at the office at 11pm. But I love it.

We are releasing a very intersting but disturbing report tomorrow, Student Hunger Count 2004. For you Ottawans, please come by and make a donation to the food bank and hear some interesting speakers. For the rest of you keep your eyes on thinkeducation.ca and the national media.

It's getting hot in here

Ack, so hot today! I'm melting!

Go Flames Go

Oh, the pain. Man, that was gut-wrenching. Apparently an entire country willing a puck into the net is not enough. But we know the flames are a Stanley Cup-calibre team. We all saw that goal in Game 6, and while it's part of the game, and I'm not suggesting we were robbed, we know our team was good enough. We just didn't have enough last night.

I hope no one is Lightning bashing today. We were beaten fairly by a great team. Andreychuk deserved to hoist that trophy. I can't wait to see some of those boys play for us in the World Cup. To Calgary: I hope everyone partied and was positive last night. There better be a big contingent to welcome the team back to the city. And let's hope Sutter wins the coaching award.

To Tampa Bay: Every citizen in your damn city better get out and touch that cup, and appreciate how much it should mean to a city. Otherwise we'll come down and kick your sun-tanned asses.

We will win the Stanley Cup tonight. Go Flames Go!

Liberals

Just got this text message on my phone from the Liberals:

"CFS has commended PMartin on his education platform. PMartin is committed to our education."

A reading of their press release may suggest something a little different...
